In 2022, Daniela de Castro was invited to Upfest, the largest live street-art festival in Europe, located in Bristol, England.
She took this opportunity to create the first mural with a hand-painted stereogram, an installation that took a month to complete. A stereogram is an optical illusion that was popular in the 90s, also known as a “magic-eye” or “hidden-eye” image. It creates the perception of a three-dimensional picture from a two-dimensional pattern. This is achieved by presenting slightly different images to each eye, which when viewed correctly creates an illusion of depth and distance. For this installation, the hidden 3D message was the phrase “LOOK BEYOND.” The mural remains of Daniela´s most challenging endeavors.
The concept for this stereogram is tied to the individual’s participation: if the viewer takes his or her time to discern the hidden message, to “look beyond,” the reward will appear. The hidden words are written by a little girl as if on glass, reminding us that life is a game that we can choose to see with childish wonder.
The public reception for the mural was very encouraging. People stayed on the site for quite some time, interacting with the artwork and trying to find the hidden message in the stereogram. Most were able to see it. For those who could not, a QR code was also painted next to the installation where the concept for the mural, as well as the solved stereogram, could be appreciated.
